This is a fine specimen of corundum, gem variety ruby, from the celebrated Zazafotsy Quarry in the Ihorombe Region of Madagascar. The main crystal, measuring approximately 1.8 cm, displays a deep purple-red color with a noticeable color shift toward mauve-blue tones depending on the light source used to observe it, a phenomenon well known for corundum from this particular deposit. The crystal is well formed, allowing the sharp hexagonal prism and bipyramidal faces to be clearly appreciated, a testament to the quality of its natural growth.

The crystal is hosted on a dark, grainy schist matrix typical of the metamorphic rocks found at Zazafotsy, where corundum formed within phlogopite-bearing gneiss and biotite schist horizons under granulite-facies metamorphic conditions.
