This is a completely natural specimen of Prase Quartz — the collector's term for leek-green quartz — accompanied by lustrous crystals of Hematite, from the classic skarn deposits of Serifos Island in the Greek Cyclades. The quartz displays the characteristic deep, saturated green color typical of the finest Serifos material, while metallic silvery-black Hematite is present directly on the quartz, creating a strong visual and mineralogical contrast that adds real value to the piece.

The quartz crystals show the elongated, slightly stubby habit typical of Serifos prase, with prismatic faces that catch the light beautifully alongside the more subdued metallic luster of the associated Hematite. This combination of a translucent, richly colored silicate with a dark, reflective iron oxide is one of the reasons Serifos prase specimens are so sought after by systematic and aesthetic collectors alike.

Serifos green quartz comes from a set of skarn deposits formed through contact metamorphism related to a Miocene granodiorite intrusion beneath the island. Mining activity on Serifos, historically focused on iron and barite ore, has been inactive for decades, and the village of Megalo Chorio near the find-spot is today an abandoned settlement — a status that makes well-formed prase specimens increasingly difficult to source on the market.

A genuinely unique piece of nature, ideal for enriching high-level mineralogical collections and equally suited to decorating refined interior spaces thanks to its strong aesthetic appeal.

The intense green color of this Prase Quartz is not due to a chromophore element within the quartz structure itself, but to microscopic, needle-like inclusions of fibrous actinolite (or, in some cases, the related mineral crossite) trapped within the growing quartz crystal, a mechanism confirmed by recent mineralogical research on Serifos material. The associated Hematite, by contrast, owes its dark metallic color and red streak to iron in the ferric (Fe³⁺) state within its Fe₂O₃ structure — the same chemistry responsible for its name, derived from the Greek word for blood.

Both minerals formed together within a skarn environment, generated when a Miocene granodiorite intrusion (roughly 9.5 to 11.6 million years old) heated and altered the surrounding rocks of Serifos Island, triggering hydrothermal fluid circulation. Iron-rich, barium-bearing solutions deposited Hematite alongside baryte in banded veins and breccias, while quartz crystallized in nearby open cavities within the skarn, incorporating the actinolite inclusions that give it its color. The quartz crystals typically show an elongated, prismatic habit, often ending in rounded bundles of smaller crystals rather than sharp single terminations, a feature considered characteristic of this locality.

Mining and mineral collecting on Serifos have been inactive for decades, and the settlement of Megalo Chorio near this find is now abandoned, making well-formed, aesthetic prase specimens like this one increasingly scarce.

The name Hematite comes from the ancient Greek word "haima," meaning blood, a reference to the deep red streak the mineral leaves behind when it is powdered or scratched.

Green quartz from Serifos, known to collectors as prase, has long been considered one of the finest examples of its kind worldwide; historical specimens recovered near Megalo Chorio were even sent to the Mineralogical Museum in Paris.

Megalo Chorio was once a thriving mining settlement between 1880 and 1912, complete with shops, schools, and even two hospitals — today it stands abandoned, its old mine galleries still visible on the surrounding hillsides.

The skarn deposits of Serifos formed through the interaction of hot hydrothermal fluids with a Miocene granodiorite intrusion, a geological process that also produced other notable minerals on the island, including andradite garnet, fluorite, and barite.
