The intense green color of this Prase Quartz is not due to a chromophore element within the quartz structure itself, but to microscopic, needle-like inclusions of fibrous actinolite (or, in some cases, the related mineral crossite) trapped within the growing quartz crystal, a mechanism confirmed by recent mineralogical research on Serifos material. The associated Hematite, by contrast, owes its dark metallic color and red streak to iron in the ferric (Fe³⁺) state within its Fe₂O₃ structure — the same chemistry responsible for its name, derived from the Greek word for blood.
Both minerals formed together within a skarn environment, generated when a Miocene granodiorite intrusion (roughly 9.5 to 11.6 million years old) heated and altered the surrounding rocks of Serifos Island, triggering hydrothermal fluid circulation. Iron-rich, barium-bearing solutions deposited Hematite alongside baryte in banded veins and breccias, while quartz crystallized in nearby open cavities within the skarn, incorporating the actinolite inclusions that give it its color. The quartz crystals typically show an elongated, prismatic habit, often ending in rounded bundles of smaller crystals rather than sharp single terminations, a feature considered characteristic of this locality.
Mining and mineral collecting on Serifos have been inactive for decades, and the settlement of Megalo Chorio near this find is now abandoned, making well-formed, aesthetic prase specimens like this one increasingly scarce.
