This delicate specimen pairs a well-formed violet fluorite cube with a lustrous smoky quartz crystal, creating a vivid tonal contrast between the cool purple hue of the fluorite and the warm, translucent smoky-brown of the quartz host. The fluorite grew directly on the quartz, and the two species share a natural, aesthetically balanced association that is prized among Alpine-type mineral collectors.

The piece comes from the Cacciano Mine at Curino/Masserano, in the Biella Province of Piedmont, Italy — a quarry still worked today mainly for industrial feldspar and quartz extraction. Fine fluorite crystals are only occasionally recovered from small vugs within this quarry, and well-formed violet cubes such as this one are considered a genuinely scarce find from the locality, which adds to the mineralogical interest and collector value of the specimen.

The fluorite crystal has been carefully repositioned to its original growth position on the matrix, preserving the natural aesthetic of the piece as it would have appeared inside the pocket.

This specimen combines two distinct mineral species: a well-formed cube of fluorite (calcium fluoride) grown directly on a crystal of smoky quartz (silicon dioxide). The violet color of the fluorite is caused by color centers, structural lattice defects generated through natural exposure to background radiation over geological time, a common origin for purple to violet coloration in fluorite worldwide. The smoky brown-grey tone of the quartz host has a related origin: trace amounts of aluminum substituting for silicon in the crystal lattice create defect centers that, once irradiated naturally over long periods, produce the characteristic smoky coloration.

Both minerals crystallized together within a small vug (miarolitic/Alpine-type cavity) inside the feldspar-quartz body exploited at the Cacciano Mine, near Curino and Masserano in the Biella Province of Piedmont. The quarry remains active today for industrial feldspar and quartz extraction, though fine mineral specimens such as this fluorite-quartz association are only occasionally recovered from isolated pockets, making them a relatively scarce find from this locality.

Fluorite is well known for its fluorescence under ultraviolet light, a property from which the term fluorescence itself originates; this specific piece has not been tested under a UV lamp, so verifying its reaction is recommended, though fluorite from many localities commonly shows a blue to violet response.
