This is a genuinely fascinating natural specimen: a multiple-crystal group of quartz displaying the bipyramidal habit characteristic of beta-quartz, the elusive high-temperature polymorph of silica. Several crystals have grown together in this cluster, each one showing well-developed pyramidal faces meeting at sharp edges without the elongated prism faces typical of ordinary alpha-quartz. This equant, doubly-pointed morphology is the fingerprint of a crystal that originally grew above 573°C in the hexagonal beta-quartz form, later inverting to the trigonal alpha-quartz structure on cooling while retaining its original external shape — a true paramorph.

The specimen comes from the Stancalasse Stream, a short tributary valley of the Sillaro River near Monterenzio, in the Bologna Province of Emilia-Romagna. This area is known for extensive clay badlands (calanchi) where ophiolitic rock blocks are exposed along the stream bed, offering the geological conditions favorable to this type of crystallization. It is a natural, undamaged collecting locality rather than a commercial mine, and specimens of this quality are not common finds.

The crystal faces show good natural lustre and the symmetry expected of a beta-quartz paramorph, making this piece as scientifically interesting as it is visually striking — an excellent addition to any serious systematic or Italian locality collection.

Chemically, this specimen is simple quartz, silicon dioxide (SiO₂), a framework (tectosilicate) mineral in which every silicon atom sits at the centre of a tetrahedron of four oxygen atoms, each oxygen shared between two tetrahedra. What makes this piece noteworthy is not its chemistry but its crystallographic history: above 573°C, quartz adopts a higher-symmetry hexagonal structure known as beta-quartz. On cooling below that temperature the silicon-oxygen tetrahedra rotate slightly into the lower-symmetry trigonal structure of ordinary alpha-quartz, but this displacive transformation happens so rapidly that the original external crystal shape is preserved intact — a phenomenon known as paramorphism.

The result is the equant, doubly-terminated bipyramidal habit seen here, with pyramidal faces dominant and prism faces minor or absent, quite different from the elongated prismatic habit typical of ordinary alpha-quartz crystals. Being essentially pure SiO₂ without significant trace-element incorporation, quartz of this type is typically colorless to white or slightly milky, since no chromophore elements are present in the structure to generate stronger coloration. The Stancalasse Stream locality, in the clay badlands near Monterenzio (Bologna Province), is a natural streambed exposure rather than an active or historic mine.

Beta-quartz is one of the great curiosities of mineralogy: it is not actually a separate mineral species. Because it only exists above 573°C and cannot be preserved (or "quenched") at room temperature, every so-called "beta-quartz" crystal in a collection is technically a paramorph — an alpha-quartz crystal that has simply inherited the external hexagonal-looking bipyramidal shape of the beta form it once was, without changing its outward geometry during the internal atomic rearrangement that occurs on cooling.

This transformation happens almost instantly and without breaking chemical bonds, which is exactly why the external crystal form is preserved so faithfully even though the internal atomic symmetry has changed. Specimens like this one, found along the Stancalasse Stream near Monterenzio in the Bologna Apennines, are a nice reminder that some of the most interesting stories in mineralogy are written not in a mineral's chemistry, but in its crystallographic memory.
