This is a genuinely eye-catching combination specimen of Pyrite on Hematite from the historic iron district of Rio Marina, on the Island of Elba, Italy. The piece is dominated by two well-developed pyritohedron (pentagonal dodecahedron) crystals reaching up to 3.5 cm across, showing the classic twelve five-sided faces of this isometric crystal form, with sharp edges and a bright, glassy-metallic surface in a deep brassy-gold tone.

The crystals sit directly on a matrix of pitch-black Hematite, displaying the compact, lamellar habit and mirror-like metallic sheen typical of the finest Rio Marina material. The contrast between the golden pyrite and the near-black, highly reflective hematite gives the specimen striking visual depth and a strong three-dimensional presence, further enhanced by the natural glossy luster of both species.

This association is far from generic: the pairing of well-formed pyrite crystals directly on a hematite matrix is considered a true signature of the Elba mining district, and material of this quality is increasingly scarce since large-scale mining on the island ceased in the early 1980s. The Rio Marina mine, the oldest and most extensively worked deposit on Elba, has been exploited since Etruscan and Roman times and is now permanently closed to industrial extraction, making fine historic-production pieces like this one progressively harder to find on the market.

This specimen combines two classic sulfide and oxide minerals in a single striking association. Pyrite (FeS₂) owes its brassy-gold color and bright metallic luster to the strong covalent bonding between iron and sulfur atoms within its cubic crystal structure, which reflects light in a way that has historically caused it to be mistaken for real gold, earning it the nickname "fool's gold." The crystals on this piece show the pentagonal dodecahedron (pyritohedron) habit, a combination form typical of the isometric crystal system in which each of the twelve faces is a five-sided pentagon rather than a simple square or triangle - a habit especially well documented in the Valle Giove and Rio Marina workings of Elba.

The matrix is composed of Hematite (Fe₂O₃), whose black to steel-gray color and mirror-like metallic sheen arise from the way ferric iron (Fe³⁺) ions are packed within its trigonal crystal lattice, a structure closely related to that of corundum. On Elba, hematite from Rio Marina is famous for occurring in compact, lamellar and micaceous aggregates with exceptional brilliance, sometimes described locally as having a "pitch-black" appearance when very fine-grained and lustrous, as seen on this specimen.
