This is a genuinely striking specimen of Kammererite, the chromium-rich variety of Clinochlore prized among collectors for its unusual and vivid violet-purple hue — a color virtually unheard of among chlorite-group minerals, which are typically green. The piece displays a dense covering of individually distinguishable crystals rather than the flaky, lamellar or micaceous habit that is far more typical of this species, giving the surface a lively, faceted texture and a noticeable play of light across the crystal faces.

The deep violet crystals stand out dramatically against the dark, contrasting chromite matrix, creating strong visual tension between the two materials and drawing the eye immediately to the crystallized side of the piece. The crystal population is abundant and well distributed across the matrix, with individual crystals sharp enough to catch and reflect light from multiple angles.

The specimen comes from the Kop Krom Mine in the Kop Daglari mountains, Aşkale District, Erzurum Province, in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey — widely regarded by mineral collectors as the single most important source of fine Kammererite in the world. According to collector reports, the finest material from this deposit was recovered primarily between the 1970s and the mid-1990s, and specimens of this quality have become considerably harder to find on the market since, as the deposit is generally considered close to exhausted. This adds a further layer of scarcity to an already uncommon mineral variety.

Measuring 52 x 41 x 35 mm and weighing 91 g, this piece sits comfortably in the small-cabinet size range, making it an excellent centerpiece for a dedicated chlorite-group or Turkish mineral collection, or simply a strikingly colored display piece on its own.

Kammererite is a chromium-rich variety of Clinochlore, a phyllosilicate mineral belonging to the chlorite group. Its intense violet-purple color is caused by chromium (Cr³⁺) ions substituting for aluminum and magnesium within the octahedral sites of the clinochlore crystal structure — the same chromophore element responsible for the green of emerald and the red of ruby, but which produces a strikingly different pink-to-violet effect in this particular structural environment due to the specific geometry of chlorite's octahedral layers.

Unlike the more common lamellar or micaceous habit typically seen in this species, this specimen displays well-individualized, sharply formed crystals with a pseudo-hexagonal, tabular to short-prismatic habit typical of the monoclinic chlorite group, giving the surface a distinctly brilliant, faceted appearance rather than a flat, scaly texture. Kammererite forms through metamorphic processes acting on ultramafic, chromium-bearing rocks such as chromite-rich serpentinites, which explains its close physical association with the dark chromite matrix visible on this piece.

The Kop Krom Mine, its type locality for material of this quality, is considered largely worked out by collectors today, with the finest specimens dating mostly from finds several decades ago, adding to the increasing scarcity of comparable material on the current market.

Kammererite was first described in 1841 by the Finnish mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiöld, who named it in honor of August Alexander Kämmerer, a mining official and chemist who served as mining director in St. Petersburg, Russia. Interestingly, the International Mineralogical Association does not recognize Kammererite as an independent mineral species — it is officially classified simply as a chromium-bearing variety of Clinochlore, part of the chlorite group.

The Kop Krom Mine, where this specimen originates, is a chromite mine that became world-famous among collectors specifically for the exceptional quality and color saturation of its Kammererite crystals — considered by many specialists to be the finest ever found anywhere. Collector accounts suggest that the richest pocket finds occurred between the late 1970s and mid-1990s, after which comparable material became increasingly scarce, making well-crystallized specimens like this one progressively harder to source.

In crystal healing traditions, Kammererite is associated with spiritual insight, emotional release, and deep inner transformation. Its rich violet color is often linked to the crown and third eye chakras, believed by practitioners to support intuition, meditation, and connection to higher states of consciousness.
