Geocronite is a rare lead-antimony sulfosalt with the general formula Pb14(Sb,As)6S23, representing the antimony-dominant end-member of a continuous solid-solution series with jordanite, its arsenic-dominant counterpart. It belongs to the jordanite homologous series within the broader sulfosalt group, minerals built from complex arrangements of lead, semi-metals such as antimony and arsenic, and sulfur.
The metallic, lead-grey to silvery-grey luster typical of geocronite is not the result of a chromophore in the traditional gemological sense, but rather a direct consequence of its sulfosalt structure: the semi-metallic bonding between lead, antimony and sulfur atoms allows partial electron mobility across the crystal lattice, producing the bright, opaque, metallic sheen characteristic of this mineral class, which can vary from dull to distinctly bright depending on crystal surface quality and degree of tarnishing. With a relatively soft hardness of only 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale but a high specific gravity of roughly 6.46, geocronite is notably dense for a mineral of modest size, explaining why even small specimens can feel unexpectedly heavy in hand.
Crystallizing in the monoclinic system, geocronite typically forms tabular crystals, sometimes sector-twinned, alongside granular to earthy massive aggregates. At the Pollone Mine it developed within low-temperature hydrothermal quartz veins hosted in a baryte-pyrite-(Pb-Zn-Ag) ore deposit, in association with galena, pyrite, tetrahedrite, baryte and quartz, the very matrix seen in this specimen. Because the Pollone Mine was permanently closed in 1990, this locality is no longer accessible for new extraction, making documented specimens increasingly difficult to source.
