This is a genuinely rare specimen of geocronite associated with quartz, a lead-antimony sulfosalt seldom encountered in the collector's market and highly prized when found in good condition. What immediately sets this piece apart is its unusually bright and lustrous metallic surface: geocronite from this locality is far more commonly seen in dull, dark lead-grey tones, so a specimen with such a clean, reflective luster is a notable exception.

The mineral is naturally intergrown with quartz, which acted as the host medium during the low-temperature hydrothermal mineralizing process that formed the vein. Despite its modest dimensions of 21 x 16 x 9 mm, the piece carries a surprisingly substantial heft for its size, a direct consequence of geocronite's high lead content and elevated specific gravity, a hallmark feature of this sulfosalt group that often catches collectors off guard.

The specimen originates from the Pollone Mine, near Valdicastello Carducci in the Apuan Alps, Lucca Province, Tuscany. This locality has been celebrated since the mid-1840s for producing some of the finest and largest documented geocronite crystals in the world, historically supplying museum-grade material studied by generations of mineralogists. The mine operated as a baryte-pyrite deposit with associated lead-zinc-silver mineralization and was permanently shut down in October 1990, not because the ore body was exhausted, but because extraction had become economically unviable. With the mine sealed and no further underground access, genuine Pollone geocronite specimens are no longer being newly collected, which adds meaningfully to their scarcity on today's market.

Geocronite is a rare lead-antimony sulfosalt with the general formula Pb14(Sb,As)6S23, representing the antimony-dominant end-member of a continuous solid-solution series with jordanite, its arsenic-dominant counterpart. It belongs to the jordanite homologous series within the broader sulfosalt group, minerals built from complex arrangements of lead, semi-metals such as antimony and arsenic, and sulfur.

The metallic, lead-grey to silvery-grey luster typical of geocronite is not the result of a chromophore in the traditional gemological sense, but rather a direct consequence of its sulfosalt structure: the semi-metallic bonding between lead, antimony and sulfur atoms allows partial electron mobility across the crystal lattice, producing the bright, opaque, metallic sheen characteristic of this mineral class, which can vary from dull to distinctly bright depending on crystal surface quality and degree of tarnishing. With a relatively soft hardness of only 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale but a high specific gravity of roughly 6.46, geocronite is notably dense for a mineral of modest size, explaining why even small specimens can feel unexpectedly heavy in hand.

Crystallizing in the monoclinic system, geocronite typically forms tabular crystals, sometimes sector-twinned, alongside granular to earthy massive aggregates. At the Pollone Mine it developed within low-temperature hydrothermal quartz veins hosted in a baryte-pyrite-(Pb-Zn-Ag) ore deposit, in association with galena, pyrite, tetrahedrite, baryte and quartz, the very matrix seen in this specimen. Because the Pollone Mine was permanently closed in 1990, this locality is no longer accessible for new extraction, making documented specimens increasingly difficult to source.

The Pollone Mine has been famous among mineralogists since the mid-1840s for yielding some of the largest and best-formed geocronite crystals ever documented, historic specimens that are still referenced and studied in modern crystallographic research today. Interestingly, because geocronite forms a continuous solid-solution series with the arsenic-dominant mineral jordanite, several historic crystals once labeled as geocronite from this very locality have, upon modern electron-microprobe re-analysis, actually turned out to be jordanite, showing just how closely intertwined these two rare sulfosalts truly are.

The mine itself was permanently closed on 3 October 1990, not due to the depletion of its ore deposits but because continued extraction had become economically unsustainable, making every specimen legitimately sourced from Pollone a piece of a chapter of Tuscan mining history that has now definitively closed.
