This is a superb example of Elbaite, the green gem-variety of Tourmaline, from Stak Nala in the Haramosh Mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan — widely regarded as the country's most celebrated Tourmaline locality. The specimen displays exceptional crystallization with a fully developed, undamaged termination, allowing every prism and pinacoid face to be admired in detail.

The quality of the crystal is outstanding: the elongated prismatic form is highly lustrous, and when exposed to strong light the deep green body color is revealed with remarkable intensity and transparency, a quality that only the finest specimens from this locality achieve.

Elbaite is a lithium-bearing member of the Tourmaline group, a complex borosilicate mineral that crystallizes in the trigonal system. In this specimen, the intense green color is caused primarily by iron (Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺) incorporated within the crystal lattice, a coloring mechanism typical of green Elbaite (historically called "Verdelite"); minor traces of manganese or chromium can occasionally contribute to the depth and tone of the green in material from this general region. The crystal displays the classic elongated prismatic habit of Tourmaline, with a triangular cross-section and striated prism faces converging into a well-formed termination — the trigonal symmetry of the species is clearly expressed in the crystal's pyramidal closure. Specimens of this quality form within miarolitic pockets of granitic pegmatites, cavities where slow-cooling, volatile-rich fluids allow large, well-terminated crystals to develop undisturbed, as is characteristic of the Stak Nala pegmatite field in the Haramosh Mountains.

Stak Nala, tucked high in the Haramosh Mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, is considered the single most important Tourmaline locality ever discovered in Pakistan. Its miarolitic granite pegmatites have produced some of the finest bi- and tri-colored Tourmaline crystals on the world market, particularly following notable pocket discoveries in the mid-2000s. While the locality is famous for multicolored, watermelon-like crystals, pieces with a pure, richly saturated green color throughout — like this specimen — are especially prized among collectors for their unusually clean and consistent hue.
