The vivid green color seen in this specimen is caused primarily by the presence of iron (Fe2+/Fe3+) substituting within the crystal structure; in many green elbaites, iron content is the main factor controlling both the depth and hue of the green color, sometimes together with minor traces of manganese, chromium, or vanadium that can subtly shift the tone toward yellowish or bluish-green. The crystal displays a well-developed prismatic habit typical of tourmaline, with clean crystal faces and terminations that showcase the trigonal symmetry characteristic of the species. Tourmaline group minerals are also notable for their pyroelectric and piezoelectric behavior, generating a small electrical charge under heating or mechanical stress due to the polar nature of their crystal structure.
