This aesthetic specimen combines dark andradite garnet with vivid green epidote, forming a striking two-tone contrast rarely seen together on a single piece. The andradite crystals display a well-formed dodecahedral habit, with sharp edges and flat, lustrous faces that catch the light and reveal the underlying cubic symmetry typical of the garnet group. The very dark, almost black tone of the garnet places it close to the melanite variety of andradite, a look often associated with a higher titanium content within the crystal lattice.

The epidote forms alongside the garnet as elongated, glassy green crystals, whose color creates an immediate visual contrast with the dark garnet masses. This mineral association is typical of calc-silicate skarn environments, where fluids rich in calcium, iron and aluminum react with the host rock during contact metamorphism, precipitating both andradite and epidote in the same pockets.

The specimen comes from the Dashkesan Co-Fe deposit, part of the historic Dashkasan mining district in the Lesser Caucasus of Azerbaijan, an area intensively worked for iron and cobalt ore since the Soviet era. This deposit is considered an uncommon source of well-crystallized mineral specimens on the international market, as most of the material extracted here has historically been destined for industrial ore processing rather than mineral collecting, making aesthetic pieces like this one genuinely scarce outside specialist circles.

Andradite is a calcium-iron garnet belonging to the nesosilicate class, part of the ugrandite series together with grossular and uvarovite. Its dark, almost black color is caused primarily by iron in the octahedral site of the crystal structure, often combined with minor titanium substitution, which pushes the color from typical brownish-green tones toward the deep black shade seen in the melanite variety, as displayed on this specimen.

Epidote, the accompanying mineral on this piece, is a calcium-aluminum-iron sorosilicate whose characteristic green color is caused by Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions occupying specific structural sites, acting as chromophores within the crystal lattice. Both minerals typically form together in skarn environments, where calcium-rich rocks are altered by hot, iron-bearing hydrothermal fluids during contact metamorphism, precisely the geological setting documented at the Dashkesan Co-Fe deposit.

Andradite forms a mineralogical series with grossular and schorlomite garnets, and its color can range from yellow-green to deep red-brown to nearly black depending on trace element content — the very dark examples, like this one, are traditionally referred to by collectors as the melanite variety.
