This exceptional specimen showcases a single, fully natural Vivianite crystal measuring an impressive 14 cm in length, originating from the remote Cabeça do Cachorro claim near São Gabriel da Cachoeira, deep in the Amazonas rainforest of Brazil. This locality has, in recent years, produced some of the finest gem-quality Vivianite crystals ever found, extracted from phosphatic nodules hidden within the forest floor and carefully cracked open to reveal the treasures inside.

The crystal displays an intense, saturated green color combined with remarkable transparency, a rare combination for this delicate phosphate mineral. Its elongated prismatic form and well-developed crystal faces reflect light elegantly, highlighting the brilliance and gemmy character of the piece. The imposing size and outstanding optical quality make this specimen exceptionally scenographic, equally suited to a dedicated mineral collection or a striking display piece in an elegant interior.

Due to the fragility and light-sensitivity typical of Vivianite, this piece should be handled with care and displayed away from prolonged direct light exposure to preserve its vivid coloration over time.

Vivianite is a hydrated iron phosphate mineral belonging to the phosphate class. Its intense green coloration is directly linked to the oxidation state of the iron within its crystal structure: in freshly formed, unoxidized Vivianite the mineral is nearly colorless, but as soon as it is exposed to visible light, a photon knocks a proton from one of the structural water molecules, converting some of the ferrous iron (Fe2+) into ferric iron (Fe3+). This internal, self-driven oxidation process — occurring without any water or oxygen entering or leaving the crystal — is what produces the vivid green, and eventually deep blue to blackish, tones for which the species is known. In specimens like this one, where oxidation has progressed moderately, the result is a rich, saturated green with excellent transparency.

The crystal displays the characteristic monoclinic, elongated prismatic habit typical of well-formed Vivianite, with flattened faces reflecting the mineral's underlying sheet-like atomic structure, which is also responsible for its perfect cleavage and notable softness. Because the oxidation process continues gradually with further light exposure, Vivianite specimens are best kept away from strong or prolonged direct light to preserve their present coloration for as long as possible.

That changed only recently, when a spectacular new find emerged from the Cabeça do Cachorro claim in a remote, densely forested part of the Brazilian Amazon, yielding vivid, gemmy green crystals in very limited quantity. Unlike most Brazilian mineral finds, which are typically associated with gem pegmatites, this Vivianite forms inside phosphate-rich concretions that must be carefully broken open to expose the crystals within, making every specimen a small surprise from the depths of the rainforest.

Vivianite is also famous among mineralogists for its dramatic color-changing behavior: freshly exposed crystals can shift from pale or colorless tones to deep green and blue within minutes of exposure to light, a phenomenon caused entirely by internal chemical changes rather than any outside contamination.

In crystal healing traditions, Vivianite is regarded as a stone of emotional release and inner transformation, believed to help its keeper process grief, release stagnant emotions, and open the heart to new beginnings.
