This is a fully natural, untreated specimen of black Uvite tourmaline from Power's Farm, a legendary collecting locality in Pierrepont, St. Lawrence County, New York. The piece displays numerous well-defined black crystals naturally grown directly on matrix, with bright, reflective crystal faces that highlight the characteristic geometry of this tourmaline-group mineral.

The crystals are arranged in a dense, harmonious cluster that gives the specimen a scenographic, three-dimensional presence, with deep black tones creating striking contrast against the surrounding rock. Every face catches the light differently, producing elegant reflections that shift as the specimen is turned, a quality much appreciated by collectors of tourmaline-group minerals.

Power's Farm is one of the most storied tourmaline localities on the East Coast of the United States, having produced world-class black tourmaline specimens for well over a hundred years, and it remains an active, privately managed collecting site to this day. Uvite belongs to the tourmaline supergroup, a complex family of borosilicate minerals that share the same trigonal crystal structure but differ in their exact chemical composition. Uvite is distinguished from other common tourmalines, such as schorl or dravite, by being notably rich in calcium in addition to magnesium and aluminum. The deep black color seen in this specimen is caused primarily by iron incorporated into the crystal structure, acting as a chromophore in the same way it darkens related iron-rich tourmalines like schorl; the higher the iron content relative to magnesium, the darker and more opaque the crystal becomes. It is worth noting, in the interest of full transparency, that black tourmaline from the Power's Farm locality has traditionally been sold under the trade name Uvite, but detailed chemical analyses conducted on material from this site have shown that visually identical crystals can in fact belong to the closely related Dravite species or to the Fluor-uvite–Uvite series; a definitive species assignment for any single crystal would require laboratory analysis, which is common practice for this particular locality.

Uvite typically forms in calcium- and boron-rich skarn environments, produced when magma intrudes and metamorphoses impure ('dirty') limestone containing silicate and phosphate impurities, crystallizing alongside minerals such as quartz, calcite, phlogopite, and apatite. Rather than the long, slender prisms typical of many other tourmalines, Uvite characteristically forms shorter, stubby, striated prismatic crystals with a triangular to hexagonal cross-section reflecting its trigonal symmetry, a habit clearly visible in this specimen's well-formed crystal faces.

The Power's Farm locality in Pierrepont, New York, was originally known as the Ryland Crary Farm in the 1890s, and it has continuously yielded exceptional black tourmaline specimens for well over a century, making it one of the most historically important tourmaline localities in the eastern United States. Unlike many classic mineral sites that have become closed or fully exhausted, this privately owned farm remains open to collectors today, usually for a small access fee, which helps explain why fine specimens like this one are still being recovered.

Interestingly, the taxonomy of the black tourmaline from this locality has long been debated among mineralogists: specimens have historically been labeled as Uvite, but more recent chemical analyses have shown that material from Power's Farm can actually belong to the closely related Dravite species or to the Fluor-uvite–Uvite series, since the different tourmaline species can look virtually identical without laboratory testing.
