The specimen consists of a large, highly transparent crystal, displaying natural clay inclusions trapped within the quartz during its growth. These internal inclusions create distinctive plays of light and visual depth, giving the piece a unique, almost sculptural character quite different from typical clear quartz.

Val Nervia hopper quartz is distinguished from similar material at other Italian localities (such as Porretta Terme) by its characteristic reddish clay inclusions, a diagnostic trait tied to the local sandstone geology in which these crystals form.

Quartz (SiO₂) from Val Nervia crystallized within fissures in sandstone (part of the Ventimiglia Flysch formation), where it grew embedded in secondary clay that filled the cracks — the source of the reddish inclusions characteristic of this locality.

The hopper (skeletal) habit seen in this specimen is a well-documented crystallographic growth phenomenon: it occurs when crystal growth happens under conditions of rapid growth and high supersaturation, causing atoms to be added more quickly to the edges and corners of the growing crystal than to the center of each face. This creates hollow, stepped depressions rather than flat, solid crystal faces — the crystal essentially grows a "skeleton" of its final form rather than filling in completely, resulting in the funnel-like recesses that give the habit its name.
