Excellent large natural crystal of Smoky Quartz from Novo Horizonte, Bahia, Brazil — the classic, world-reference locality for rutilated quartz and rutile-on-hematite specimens.

The crystal is richly included with golden rutile needles, radiating outward in spectacular star formations from small hematite bases visible at their center. Excellent transparency throughout the smoky quartz allows the golden rutile to be clearly appreciated from multiple angles, creating a striking contrast between the warm gold of the rutile and the smoky, amber-gray tone of the host crystal.

Novo Horizonte is internationally recognized as producing the finest rutile-hematite associations in quartz found anywhere in the world, and specimens combining large size with excellent clarity, like this one, are especially prized among collectors.

A visually spectacular, high-clarity specimen, ideal for collectors seeking a bold, brilliant display piece from mineralogy's most celebrated rutilated quartz locality.

The rutile star formations in this specimen grew through epitaxial growth on hematite — a process in which rutile crystals, though a completely different mineral species (a titanium oxide, tetragonal system) align themselves along specific crystallographic directions dictated by the hematite's own trigonal structure. This is why rutile needles from this locality typically radiate from their hematite base at consistent 60° angles to one another, rather than growing in random directions. The surrounding smoky quartz later encased both minerals as it continued to crystallize, preserving the rutile stars exactly as they formed.

  • Formula: SiO₂ (Quartz, host), TiO₂ (Rutile), Fe₂O₃ (Hematite)
  • Key chemical elements: Silicon (Si), Oxygen (O), Titanium (Ti), Iron (Fe)
  • Hardness (Mohs scale): 7 (Quartz), 6 – 6.5 (Rutile), 5 – 6 (Hematite)
  • Mineral class: Tectosilicates (Quartz host), Oxides (Rutile, Hematite inclusions)
  • Crystal system: Trigonal (Quartz), Tetragonal (Rutile), Trigonal (Hematite)
  • Crystal habit: Large single quartz crystal with radiating acicular rutile inclusions on hematite
  • Formation: Hydrothermal quartz crystallization with epitaxial rutile-on-hematite inclusions
  • Color: Smoky brown-gray (Quartz), golden (Rutile), metallic gray-black (Hematite)

The golden rutile needles in Novo Horizonte quartz almost always grow directly from small hematite crystals, radiating outward at a fixed 60° angle from one another — this isn't random: it's a crystallographic phenomenon called epitaxy, where rutile's crystal structure aligns with and grows directly on the surface of the hematite host, following the underlying atomic symmetry of the hematite crystal.

Novo Horizonte (formerly part of the Ibitiara district) has been producing this specific rutile-on-hematite-in-quartz combination since it was first mined, and remains, to this day, unmatched by any other locality worldwide for the phenomenon.

In crystal healing traditions, Rutilated Quartz is regarded as a particularly powerful combination, believed to amplify quartz's energy-clearing properties with rutile's association with illumination and positive energy flow. Hematite, at the base of the rutile, is traditionally linked to grounding and physical vitality. These interpretations are not scientifically proven.
