Rather than growing along its usual c-axis, a gwindel grows along an a-axis instead, with the crystal lattice twisting incrementally during formation — a phenomenon recently linked to a high density of parallel screw dislocations that produce a uniform "Eshelby twist" during very slow crystal growth.
