Excellent natural specimen of Hematoid Quartz from the Orange River, one of the most internationally celebrated localities for this variety, straddling the border region between South Africa and Namibia.

The specimen features a main crystal accompanied by several additional crystals, all naturally doubly terminated and free of any matrix attachment — true floater crystals that grew independently within open hydrothermal cavities. The bicolor effect is especially striking: clear to white quartz contrasts against vivid brick-red zones and coatings caused by natural hematite inclusions, creating a warm, decorative visual character across the piece.

Orange River hematoid quartz only became widely known to collectors in the late 1990s, and remains highly sought after for its uniquely saturated red tones — among the most vivid seen in quartz from any locality worldwide.

Quartz from the Orange River region formed within vuggy hydrothermal quartz-carbonate veins that experienced significant later-stage epithermal and supergene alteration, allowing iron-rich fluids to introduce hematite into and onto the growing crystals.

The bright red coloration is caused by hematite (Fe₂O₃), which can occur both as internal inclusions trapped along growth zones within the quartz and as later surface coatings — producing the strong color contrast against the clear to white quartz seen in this specimen. The doubly terminated, matrix-free habit of the crystals indicates they grew freely within open cavities rather than attached to a host rock surface, later becoming loose ("floater") crystals within the vug.

Orange River hematoid quartz remained largely unknown to the international collector market until the late 1990s, when new finds along this remote desert border region began reaching dealers — quickly making it one of the most recognizable "red quartz" localities in the world.

The red color in hematoid quartz comes from hematite that was incorporated into the quartz either as inclusions during crystal growth or as later coatings along fractures and growth zones — meaning each specimen's pattern of red is a natural record of the fluids present at the time.

In crystal healing traditions, Quartz is regarded as a master healer and energy amplifier, while the hematite content is often associated with grounding and physical vitality. The combination is sometimes described as balancing energizing and stabilizing properties together. These interpretations are not scientifically proven.
