The piece is covered with numerous well-developed yellow crystals showing excellent transparency, allowing the observer to appreciate the sharp, resinous-to-adamantine crystal faces and the hexagonal, short-prismatic to barrel-shaped habit typical of the species.

The crystals grew naturally in a tight, aesthetic association that gives the specimen a scenographic, almost sculptural presence — the kind of crystal formation and vivid color saturation that made this Thai find so celebrated among mimetite specimens when it first appeared on the international market. Mimetite is a lead arsenate chloride belonging to the apatite supergroup, closely related to pyromorphite (its phosphate analogue) and vanadinite (its vanadate analogue), with which it can form solid solution series. The vivid yellow color seen in this specimen is idiochromatic, meaning it arises directly from the mineral's own essential chemical composition rather than from trace impurities: both the lead and the arsenate groups occupying the crystal structure are intrinsically chromophoric, with lead contributing cool yellow tones and the arsenate group reinforcing the warmer yellow-to-orange range typical of the species.

Crystals typically form as short hexagonal prisms, often with a barrel-like or rounded profile capped by pyramidal faces, reflecting the hexagonal crystal system and the pseudo-hexagonal symmetry inherited from the apatite-type structure. Mimetite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidized upper portions of lead-arsenic ore deposits through the alteration of primary sulfides such as galena, typically in association with cerussite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite, and other supergene lead minerals.

The mimetite from this Thai locality has an unusual history: it was first collected for the specimen market in the fall of 1996 and more extensively in early 1998 by two mineral collectors, who debuted the finest pieces at the 1998 Bologna mineral show in Italy. To protect the confidentiality of the discovery, the material was originally sold under the generic trade name 'Hat Yai', after a well-known town in Songkhla Province — even though the actual mine, later identified as the Guatomo Mine, lies near the village of Tham Thalu in the neighboring Yala Province.

Today the Guatomo Mine is regarded as one of the classic worldwide localities for gemmy, yellow mimetite crystals, ranking alongside legendary finds such as the 1971 Tsumeb Mine discovery in Namibia. Since the deposit was only actively worked for specimens for a couple of years in the late 1990s and has since been abandoned, all Thai mimetite on the market today — including this specimen — represents old, finite stock that can no longer be replenished.
