Mimetite is a lead arsenate chloride mineral, Pb₅(AsO₄)₃Cl, belonging to the apatite supergroup. It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of lead-bearing ore deposits, where it commonly develops hexagonal crystals terminated by combinations of pinacoid and pyramid faces, sometimes with a distinctive barrel-shaped ("campylite") habit.

The yellow coloration, along with the darker shading visible in this specimen, is linked to trace element substitutions and variations in the arsenate-phosphate-vanadate chemistry within the crystal lattice, which affect how the mineral absorbs and reflects visible light. The naturally crossed arrangement of the two crystals occurred when two individual crystals nucleated close together and grew across one another over time.
