This specimen combines Mimetite and Cerussite, two secondary minerals typical of oxidized lead-ore deposits, in a naturally grown and visually striking association from the Nakhlak Mine in Iran. The piece is completely natural, with no artificial treatment or repair, and displays a well-developed crystal formation that highlights the beauty of both species.

The Cerussite forms as clusters of thin, tabular crystals that have grown through cyclic twinning, producing the characteristic lattice-like, net-like (reticulated) pattern for which this locality is well known among collectors. Scattered across and between these pale, lustrous plates are fine, sharp microcrystals of Mimetite, glowing with a vivid orange tone that creates an eye-catching visual contrast against the lighter Cerussite matrix.

The Nakhlak Mine, located in the Anarak District of Nain County, Isfahan Province, is one of the oldest lead-silver mining sites in Iran, with underground workings dating back to the Parthian and Sassanid periods. It remains a semi-active operation today, and specimens combining well-formed Mimetite with reticulated Cerussite from its oxidized zone are considered classic and desirable pieces among systematic and aesthetic mineral collectors alike.

With its rich structural detail and the pleasing contrast between the two mineral species, this specimen is well suited both for a serious mineralogical collection and as a striking natural display piece.

Mimetite [Pb5(AsO4)3Cl] is a secondary lead arsenate that forms in the oxidized zone of lead deposits, typically through the alteration of primary galena in the presence of arsenic-bearing groundwater. At Nakhlak it occurs as fine, sharp hexagonal microcrystals with a vivid orange-red color; chemical analyses of material from this locality have identified trace chromium substituting for arsenic within the crystal lattice as the cause of this striking hue, a relatively unusual coloring mechanism since most Mimetite worldwide is pale yellow, brown, or colorless, with color there more commonly linked to iron impurities.

Cerussite (PbCO3) is a lead carbonate that likewise forms as a supergene mineral, developing when carbonate-rich fluids react with galena in the oxidized portion of the deposit. It commonly crystallizes as thin tabular crystals that grow together through cyclic twinning, producing the distinctive lattice-like, reticulated aggregates for which Nakhlak material is particularly well known. Cerussite is usually colorless to white or pale gray; its color is governed largely by the purity of the lead carbonate itself, with gray tones arising from minor structural impurities or inclusions rather than a true chromophore.

The Nakhlak deposit is a carbonate-hosted, vein-type lead-silver ore body worked since antiquity and still semi-active today, and it remains one of the most significant sources of well-formed oxidized-zone lead minerals from Central Iran.

The Nakhlak Mine is one of the oldest known lead deposits in Iran, with mining activity traced back more than 2,500 years to the Parthian and Sassanid empires. Ancient smelting sites, tools, and even wooden shoes used by early miners have been preserved in some of the historic adits near the modern workings.

Lead ores from this region of Central Iran are also linked to some of the earliest documented silver production in the ancient world, obtained through the cupellation of argentiferous galena — a technique that helped fuel silver use across the Iranian plateau as far back as the fourth millennium BC.

The vivid orange color seen in Mimetite from Nakhlak has, in analyzed specimens from this locality, been linked to trace chromium substituting into the crystal structure — a relatively uncommon cause of color for this mineral species, which is usually pale yellow to brown.
