This natural specimen of Lazulite comes from Rapid Creek, one of the most celebrated and geologically unique mineral localities in the Canadian Arctic. The piece displays well-formed, lustrous crystals of Lazulite in a deep, night-blue tone, sitting prominently on a matrix richly dotted with small, glassy quartz crystals that catch the light from every angle.

The contrast between the saturated indigo-blue of the Lazulite and the bright, glittering quartz crystals gives the specimen an unusually decorative and dynamic surface texture, valued both for scientific interest and for display. The Lazulite formed within phosphate-rich, folded and faulted sideritic ironstones and shales of Late Cretaceous age, a distinctive geological setting found almost nowhere else in the world.

Lazulite is a phosphate mineral with the chemical formula (Mg,Fe²⁺)Al₂(PO₄)₂(OH)₂, forming a solid-solution series with its iron-rich relative, Scorzalite. The signature deep blue color of this species is caused specifically by iron (Fe²⁺) substituting for magnesium within the crystal structure: the more iron present, the darker and more saturated the blue tone becomes, which explains the particularly intense, night-blue hue seen in material from this locality compared to the paler, more common Lazulite found elsewhere.

Crystallizing in the monoclinic system, Lazulite typically develops as steep bipyramidal or wedge-shaped crystals, and is often twinned — a habit well documented in specimens from this deposit. At this locality, Lazulite formed at relatively low hydrothermal temperatures within phosphate-rich, folded and faulted sideritic ironstones and shales of Late Cretaceous age, a formation environment that favored the growth of unusually sharp, well-terminated, and lustrous crystals compared to Lazulite from most other world localities.

The name "Lazulite" derives from the Arabic word "lazaward," meaning sky or heaven, a nod to its striking blue color — a name it shares in origin with the unrelated mineral Lazurite, though the two are chemically very different species.

Rapid Creek, in Yukon's Dawson Mining District, is one of the most remote mineral-collecting localities in Canada.
