The specimen displays multiple completely transparent, gem-clear cubic crystals, featuring striking purple and blue cloud-like inclusions suspended within, giving each crystal a soft, luminous depth. The cube edges show natural beveling, a signature trait of this locality, giving the crystals a rounded, almost sculptural appearance despite being entirely natural.

The Shangbao Mine is now largely depleted and no longer in active commercial production — specimens of this clarity and color are becoming increasingly difficult to find, which continues to raise their value among collectors year after year.

Fluorite is a calcium halide mineral (calcium fluoride) that at Shangbao formed within hydrothermal veins rich in quartz, calcite, dolomite and sulfides such as pyrite, allowing for the slow, well-ordered crystallization that produced this locality's characteristic sharp cubic crystals.

The naturally beveled edges seen on these crystals are a cube modified by the rhombic dodecahedron — a classic combined crystal form where the cube faces {100} are joined by smaller, inclined dodecahedral faces {110} along the edges. This growth pattern is what gives the crystals their softened, rounded-edge appearance despite the underlying cubic (isometric) symmetry, and is a well-documented, recognizable trait of Shangbao Mine fluorite.

The purple and blue cloud-like inclusions visible in this specimen are linked to color centers within the crystal lattice — structural defects connected to trace element content and natural radiation exposure over geological time — with color intensity and hue shifting depending on conditions during each growth phase.

Fluorite is also the mineral that gave its name to the phenomenon of fluorescence. Material from the Shangbao Mine is particularly well documented for displaying a vivid blue or purple glow under both short-wave and long-wave ultraviolet light, caused by trace activator elements such as europium trapped within the crystal lattice.
