The specimen displays a well-formed cluster of cubic crystals in vivid yellow-green tones, further enriched by striking red mineral inclusions and zoning, likely resulting from iron oxide staining on the crystal surfaces. El Hammam is considered the most important fluorite locality in Africa, celebrated among collectors for producing crystals with an exceptional range of colors and internal zoning, often within a single specimen.

Fluorite is a calcium halide mineral (calcium fluoride) that typically forms in hydrothermal veins, often in association with quartz, calcite and sulfide minerals. At El Hammam, it commonly develops well-formed cubic crystals.

The yellow-green coloration is linked to trace element substitutions and structural defects within the crystal lattice (color centers), including rare earth elements such as europium and yttrium, which alter how the mineral absorbs and reflects visible light. The reddish inclusions and surface zoning visible on this specimen are most likely caused by iron oxide (hematite/limonite-type) staining, deposited on crystal faces during or after growth.

Fluorite is also the mineral that gave its name to the phenomenon of fluorescence. When exposed to ultraviolet light, trace activator elements trapped in the crystal lattice — commonly europium — absorb the UV energy and briefly jump to a higher energy state; as they fall back, they release that energy as visible light. This effect stops instantly once the UV source is removed (unlike phosphorescence, where the glow persists after the light is turned off). Fluorite from the El Hammam Mine is well known among collectors for this trait, due to its typical trace europium content.
