Excellent natural specimen of Epidote associated with Quartz from the well-known Khowrin Mountain locality, near Kuhandan Village, Saveh area, Markazi Province, Iran.

The specimen displays numerous well-developed epidote crystals growing in association with quartz, creating a visually appealing contrast between the deep green coloration of epidote and the lighter quartz matrix. The crystals show good natural luster and clearly defined faces, giving the specimen a strong aesthetic presence.

The overall formation is balanced and natural, with epidote crystals distributed across the quartz in a way that enhances both structure and visual depth. This locality is well known among collectors for producing bright, lustrous epidote specimens with good crystal definition.

A very attractive and display-worthy piece, especially impressive in natural light due to its reflective crystal faces and contrast between minerals.

Epidote is a calcium aluminium iron sorosilicate mineral commonly formed in metamorphic and hydrothermal environments. It typically occurs in association with quartz and other silicate minerals within vein systems and metamorphic rocks. Quartz is a crystalline form of silicon dioxide that often acts as a host matrix for various mineral associations and inclusions depending on geological conditions and growth environment.

The characteristic green coloration of epidote is caused by the presence of iron (Fe³⁺) substituting for aluminium within its crystal structure, which modifies the way the mineral absorbs and reflects light in the visible spectrum. Variations in iron content and oxidation conditions during formation can produce a range of green tones. Quartz, when not colorless, may appear white to translucent depending on structural purity, micro-inclusions, or growth conditions in hydrothermal systems.

  • Formula (Epidote): Ca₂(Al,Fe)₃(SiO₄)₃(OH)
  • Formula (Quartz): SiO₄
  • Mineral class: Sorosilicates (Epidote), Silicates (Quartz)
  • Crystal system: Monoclinic (Epidote), Trigonal (Quartz)
  • Crystal habit: Prismatic crystals (Epidote), massive to crystalline matrix (Quartz)
  • Formation: Metamorphic and hydrothermal vein environments
  • Key chemical elements: Calcium (Ca), Aluminium (Al), Iron (Fe), Silicon (Si), Oxygen (O), Hydrogen (H)
  • Color: Green to pistachio green; can also vary from yellow-green to darker green tones depending on iron content and oxidation state during formation.

Epidote often forms in metamorphic rocks where iron-rich fluids interact with calcium-bearing minerals. Its distinctive green color has made it an important indicator mineral in geological studies of metamorphic grade and fluid activity.

Iran, particularly the Markazi region, is known for producing epidote specimens with unusually bright coloration and good crystal definition compared to many global localities.

In crystal healing traditions, Epidote is associated with personal growth, transformation and the release of emotional patterns. It is often considered a stone that amplifies perception and encourages change.

Quartz is widely regarded as an energy amplifier and clarity stone in metaphysical practices. Together, epidote and quartz are symbolically associated with balance between transformation and mental clarity. These interpretations are not scientifically proven.
