Crocoite forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of lead deposits, where groundwater enriched in chromium — sourced from nearby chromium-bearing ultramafic rocks — reacts with lead minerals such as galena. At Dundas, this process occurred within a deeply weathered gossan, commonly alongside goethite, as seen in this specimen. The vivid red color comes directly from the chromate (CrO₄) group within the mineral's core structure, giving crocoite one of the most intensely saturated natural reds found in the mineral kingdom. Crocoite was the mineral through which chromium was first discovered as a chemical element, in 1797 by French chemist Louis Nicolas Vauquelin — its name comes from the Greek "krokos," meaning saffron, referencing its vivid color.

Crocoite crystals are naturally light-sensitive and can gradually lose some of their brilliance and translucency with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight — for this reason, collectors are advised to display specimens away from constant, intense sun exposure to preserve their vivid color over time.

In crystal healing traditions, Crocoite is sometimes associated with creativity, passion and motivation, drawing on its intense, fiery red color. These interpretations are not scientifically proven.
