Excellent natural specimen of Aegirine from Mount Malosa, Zomba, Malawi — the locality that redefined the world's supply of this species in the 1990s, producing crystals of a quality never seen before from any other source.

The specimen consists of a single, elongated crystal measuring an impressive 95mm, slender and well-developed, with the typical dark, near-black coloration and excellent luster characteristic of the finest Malosa material. The crystal faces are clearly defined, and the termination is complete and undamaged — a trait that is genuinely uncommon for the species, since most aegirine from this locality terminates in simple flat pinacoids rather than a fully finished point.

Aegirine remains a mineral relatively unfamiliar to the general public, even though the finest specimens are highly regarded among specialist collectors — making a well-formed, perfectly terminated crystal of this size a genuinely uncommon find.

A striking, elegant specimen with strong sculptural presence, ideal for collectors of pyroxene-group minerals or anyone seeking a bold, dark, naturally faceted display piece.

Aegirine is a sodium iron silicate, NaFeSi₂O₆, belonging to the clinopyroxene subgroup of the pyroxene group. It typically forms in alkaline igneous rocks such as syenites and their associated pegmatites, as is the case at Mount Malosa, where it crystallized within alkalic pegmatite pockets alongside feldspar, quartz and other unusual rare-earth-bearing minerals.

The crystal system is monoclinic, and aegirine commonly develops elongated, prismatic crystals with a characteristic dark green to black color, caused by its iron content (Fe³⁺) built directly into the mineral's core chemical structure — similar to how peridot's color is intrinsic rather than a trace impurity. This structural iron also gives well-formed crystals their strong, almost metallic-looking luster on fresh crystal faces.

Before the discovery of the Mount Malosa deposit in the 1990s, well-formed aegirine specimens were genuinely rare on the collector market, with most available material coming from Mont Saint-Hilaire, Canada, in smaller, less striking crystals. Malosa's freestanding, lustrous crystals — some reaching up to 30cm in exceptional cases — instantly became the new world standard for the species.

Aegirine takes its name from Ægir, the Norse god of the sea, chosen because the mineral was first described from a coastal locality in Norway in 1834.

In crystal healing traditions, Aegirine is sometimes associated with courage, protection and cutting through confusion, drawing on its name — from Ægir, the Norse sea god — and its bold, sharp crystal form. These interpretations are not scientifically proven.
