This is a naturally formed staurolite twin displaying the mineral's most celebrated feature: two prismatic crystals intergrown to create a striking cross-shaped penetration twin. The specimen shows a well-developed crystal habit, with flat, discernible faces along the prisms that allow the geometry of the twin to be fully appreciated from multiple angles. The overall tone is a warm, intense reddish hue, characteristic of iron-rich staurolite from this part of Brittany.

Staurolite is famous for an unusually high rate of twinning compared to most minerals, a consequence of its complex chemistry and the disruptions this introduces during crystal growth. Twins typically intersect at either 60° or 90°, the latter producing the symmetrical Greek-cross shape seen in the finest specimens, historically nicknamed "croix de Bretagne" or "croisette" in French collecting circles.

The piece comes from the area around Coray, in the Châteaulin arrondissement of Finistère, Brittany — one of the classic staurolite localities of continental Europe, where twinned crystals weather out of mica schist formed under regional metamorphism. Staurolite is a nesosilicate mineral belonging to the broader family of iron-aluminum silicates. It typically crystallizes within schists and gneisses that have undergone intermediate to high-grade regional metamorphism, forming when aluminous shale is subjected to sufficient heat and pressure deep within the crust — commonly alongside minerals such as garnet, kyanite, mica, and sillimanite.

This specimen's reddish coloration is caused primarily by iron incorporated within the staurolite crystal structure, where Fe2+ substitutes into the mineral's cation sites; fine associated iron-oxide content can further intensify the warm reddish-brown tones typical of Breton material.

The most remarkable feature of staurolite is its strong tendency to form penetration twins, where two prismatic crystals grow through one another at a defined angle — most often 60°, producing an X-shaped twin, or 90°, producing the classic perpendicular cross seen in the finest specimens like this one. This twinning behavior is linked to disruptions in the mineral's ordered crystal growth caused by its complex chemical substitutions.
