Hematite (Fe₂O₃) and Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) are both iron oxide minerals that commonly form together in metamorphic and hydrothermal environments, including talc-chlorite schist bodies like those at Orani. Hematite typically develops tabular to rhombohedral crystals, while magnetite characteristically forms octahedral crystals — both frequently occurring with a bright, metallic to submetallic luster, as seen in this specimen.

The dark color of both minerals comes directly from their iron content: hematite in its fully oxidized Fe³⁺ state, magnetite containing a mix of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions. This mixed iron valence in magnetite is also responsible for its natural magnetic properties, a rare trait among common minerals.
