Ruby is the red variety of the mineral Corundum composed of aluminum oxide with the chemical formula Al₂O₃. It belongs to the oxide mineral class and crystallizes in the trigonal system. Its red coloration is caused by trace amounts of chromium substituting aluminum in the crystal structure, and some specimens show strong red fluorescence under UV light.
