This is a well-formed, doubly terminated crystal of Schorl — the black, iron-rich member of the Tourmaline group — displaying clean prismatic faces on both ends and the fine longitudinal striations typical of this species. The crystal's natural growth has produced a glossy, deep black surface with strong luster, allowing the trigonal symmetry and the individual crystal faces to be clearly appreciated.

The specimen comes from Araçuaí, in the northeastern part of Minas Gerais, Brazil — one of the classic pegmatite districts of the region, historically associated with the production of fine tourmaline, topaz and quartz crystals. Schorl from this area typically forms in granitic pegmatites, growing alongside quartz, feldspar and mica in slowly cooling, boron-enriched melts.

Schorl is the iron-rich, black member of the Tourmaline group of borosilicate minerals, with the general formula NaFe2+3Al6(BO3)3Si6O18(OH)4. Its deep black color is caused primarily by a high concentration of Fe2+ (ferrous iron) within the crystal structure, an effect that is often enhanced by Fe2+-Ti4+ intervalence charge transfer, intensifying light absorption and producing the opaque black appearance typical of this species.

Crystallizing in the trigonal system, Schorl typically develops elongated, three-sided prismatic crystals with pronounced longitudinal striations running parallel to the c-axis, a feature caused by minor fluctuations in growth conditions over time. This specimen shows the doubly terminated habit, with well-formed pyramidal terminations visible on both ends of the crystal, indicating that it grew freely rather than being permanently attached to a matrix.

Schorl forms mainly in granite pegmatites, where boron-rich residual melts crystallize slowly alongside quartz, feldspar and mica; it can also occur in hydrothermal veins and certain metamorphic rocks. It is by far the most common species of the Tourmaline group in nature.

The name Schorl has a curious linguistic history: it derives from an old German mining term used since at least the 16th century to describe the dark crystals found alongside tin ore in the mines of Saxony, an area where a nearby village once carried a very similar name.

Araçuaí, in Minas Gerais, belongs to one of Brazil's most productive tourmaline-bearing pegmatite districts, historically yielding not only black schorl but also colorful elbaite tourmalines, topaz and quartz varieties prized by collectors worldwide.
