A beautiful floater calcite crystal from Parma Province, Emilia-Romagna, showing a genuine contact twin with a water-clear, vitreous transparency and crisp, well-defined facets across its surface. Under long-wave UV light the specimen reveals a vivid red fluorescence together with a notable afterglow (phosphorescence), two features that add both scientific and aesthetic appeal to an already elegant twinned crystal. Entirely natural and untreated, it is a fine addition for systematic or fluorescent-mineral collections.

This calcite specimen is a floater twin, meaning it grew freely without any point of attachment to a matrix, allowing every face of the crystal to develop cleanly and symmetrically. The twinning is immediately visible in the way the crystal's faces meet along a shared contact plane, a classic expression of calcite's tendency to form contact twins during crystallization.

The body of the crystal is transparent with a bright vitreous lustre, and the surface is covered in sharp, well-defined facets that catch the light from multiple angles, giving the piece a lively, glassy appearance typical of fine calcite from carbonate and volcanic-hosted deposits in the northern Apennines. Parma Province is known among Italian collectors for calcite occurrences linked to basalt quarries and sedimentary formations scattered across its mountainous territory, part of the broader mineralogical heritage of Emilia-Romagna.

What elevates this specimen beyond its natural elegance is its behaviour under ultraviolet light: exposure to a UV lamp triggers an intense red fluorescence, followed by a distinct phosphorescent afterglow once the light source is removed. This dual optical response is a well-documented phenomenon in manganese-bearing calcite and turns an already attractive twinned crystal into a genuine curiosity piece for anyone interested in mineral luminescence.

No damage or repair is mentioned for this specimen, and it is offered as a completely natural, untreated mineral, exactly as extracted from its find site.
