This is a laboratory-grown bismuth crystal from Japan, created through a controlled cooling process of molten bismuth rather than through natural geological formation. This method is a well-established practice among specialized producers and is prized by collectors for the striking geometric shapes it produces, which are rarely seen in nature.

The crystal displays the classic hopper (skeletal) growth pattern typical of bismuth: as the melt solidifies, the outer edges and corners of the growing crystal cool and grow faster than the flatter central faces, leaving stepped, staircase-like terraces that spiral inward toward the center. The result is a striking architecture of nested, geometric, concentric levels that appear almost fractal in their repetition.

The metallic surface is coated with an extremely thin oxide layer that forms naturally as the hot bismuth reacts with air while cooling. This oxide film is only a few nanometers thick, and it produces vivid iridescent colors, purple, blue, gold, green and pink, through thin-film light interference rather than pigmentation: the hues shift depending on the oxide thickness and the angle from which the crystal is viewed.

Measuring 21 x 20 x 24 mm and weighing 19 g, this compact specimen is well suited to a thumbnail-size display, ideal for collectors of crystal curiosities, mineralogical study, or decorative use on a desk or shelf.
