This is a historically significant Hemimorphite specimen, once part of the Pio Mariani museum collection, formed of numerous well-developed crystals with the largest reaching nearly 5 cm — an exceptional size for a species that is far more commonly found as thin crusts or patinas on matrix rather than as individual, well-formed crystals. The body of each crystal shows a deep reddish-brown to dark brown tone that fades toward lighter, paler hues at the terminations, making this piece particularly distinctive. Under ultraviolet light the specimen is strongly reactive, glowing bright yellow.

This is a remarkable historical Hemimorphite specimen that, decades ago, formed part of the collection of the Pio Mariani museum. It is an enormous cluster composed of numerous individual crystals, the largest of which approaches nearly 5 cm in length — a truly outstanding size for this species.

What makes this piece particularly special is the crystal habit itself. Hemimorphite most commonly occurs as thin coatings, botryoidal crusts, or lamellar patinas covering matrix, and only rarely develops into well-individualized, elongated crystals of any real size. Here the crystals grow as distinct, sword-like prisms, each displaying the classic hemimorphic asymmetry that gives the species its name: one end of the crystal typically shows a sharper pyramidal termination, while the opposite end is closed by flatter, domed faces.

The coloration is another highlight: the body of the crystals shows a deep reddish-brown to dark brown tone, which gradually lightens toward the tips. This chromatic zoning is caused by iron oxide staining, most likely a thin coating of hematite or limonite on the crystal surfaces, a coloring agent frequently responsible for the brown to reddish-brown tones seen in Hemimorphite from this locality, where the mineral typically forms in association with iron-rich gossan.

The Ojuela Mine, near the town of Mapimí in Durango, is one of Mexico's most celebrated mineral localities, discovered by Spanish miners in 1598 and worked for gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper for over three centuries. Large-scale industrial ore extraction ceased in the 1940s, but small-scale specimen collecting by local cooperatives has continued sporadically ever since, which keeps fine pieces like this one increasingly hard to find on today's market.

Under ultraviolet light the specimen reacts strongly, glowing a vivid yellow, adding a further layer of visual interest to an already rare and singular piece.

Hemimorphite is a zinc silicate hydrate that most commonly forms as thin crusts, botryoidal masses or lamellar coatings on matrix, making well-individualized crystals of any real size, like those in this specimen, genuinely uncommon. Its crystals are hemimorphic, meaning the two ends of each crystal display different termination geometries, typically a sharper pyramidal end opposite a flatter, dome-like end, a distinctive structural asymmetry that gives the species its name.

The reddish-brown to dark brown coloring of this specimen, lightening toward the crystal tips, is caused by iron oxide staining on the crystal surfaces, most likely hematite or limonite, a coloring mechanism commonly responsible for brown and reddish-brown tones in Hemimorphite from iron-rich gossan environments such as the Ojuela deposit. Under ultraviolet light the piece is reported to fluoresce a vivid yellow; Hemimorphite is only occasionally fluorescent, most typically showing a weak blue response under shortwave UV, with yellow fluorescence being a less common but documented reaction for the species, so it is always advisable to verify the response under a UV lamp for full confirmation.

The Ojuela Mine, where this specimen originates, was discovered in 1598 and mined on an industrial scale for over three centuries before large-scale commercial extraction ceased in the 1940s; specimen collecting has nonetheless continued on a small, sporadic scale ever since, adding to the rarity of well-documented historical pieces like this one.

The name Hemimorphite comes from the Greek for 'half form', a reference to the mineral's unusual hemimorphic crystal habit: each crystal grows with two different types of termination at its opposite ends, one typically pyramidal and pointed, the other flatter and dome-like, as if the crystal had grown in two different ways at once.

The Ojuela Mine is considered one of the greatest mineral localities in the world and is the type locality for several rare species, including paradamite and mapimite. It has been worked since 1598, yet it was not until a huge adamite-filled cavity was discovered in 1946 that the mine became truly famous among mineral collectors worldwide.

Although large-scale mining at Ojuela ended decades ago, the site continues to yield specimens today thanks to small teams of local collectors who still explore its vast network of tunnels, making historic pieces such as this one, tied to the Pio Mariani museum collection, an increasingly rare link to the mine's golden age of specimen production.
