This aesthetic kyanite crystal displays the characteristic bladed, flattened and elongated habit of the species, with a rich blue color that stands out sharply against the pale, silvery mica schist matrix. Subtle color zoning is visible along the blade, a feature typical of kyanite from alpine metamorphic environments, and small brownish crystals of staurolite are present as accessory inclusions, reinforcing the strong visual contrast of the piece.

The specimen comes from Sponda Alp on Pizzo Forno, a mountain of the Lepontine Alps overlooking the Chironico Valley near Faido, in the Leventina district of Canton Ticino, Switzerland. This classic alpine-cleft locality has produced kyanite together with staurolite since historic finds in the 1970s and 1980s, and gem-quality, transparent alpine kyanite of this kind is considerably scarcer on today's market than the more common opaque material from Brazil, adding to its mineralogical importance.

According to the seller, the kyanite reacts under ultraviolet light with a bright red glow, a phenomenon documented in kyanite from several classic worldwide localities and caused by trace chromium replacing aluminum within the crystal structure - collectors are encouraged to confirm the effect with their own UV lamp.

Kyanite is an aluminum silicate belonging to the nesosilicate group, chemically identical to andalusite and sillimanite but crystallizing in the triclinic system as a distinct polymorph. It typically forms bladed, flattened and elongated crystals inside mica schists and gneisses produced by regional metamorphism under high pressure, exactly the conditions found in the Alpine orogenic belt of Ticino. The blue color so typical of the species is caused by an intervalence charge transfer between Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions occupying aluminum sites within the crystal lattice, which is also responsible for the color zoning often seen along a single blade.

Kyanite is well known among mineralogists for its markedly anisotropic hardness - historically the reason for its old name disthene, or 'two strengths' - measuring around 4.5-5 on the Mohs scale along the length of the crystal but rising to 6.5-7 across it. Some kyanite, including material from a handful of classic worldwide localities, contains traces of chromium (Cr3+) substituting for aluminum, a substitution known to activate a red fluorescence under longwave ultraviolet light; collectors are encouraged to verify this reaction with their own UV lamp on this specific piece.

Sponda Alp on Pizzo Forno is one of the classic historic kyanite localities of the Swiss Alps, with notable finds recorded in the 1970s and again in 1981 that produced unusually transparent, gem-quality blue crystals associated with staurolite - material now considerably harder to find than the abundant kyanite supplied commercially from Brazil.
