This is a natural citrine quartz specimen of remarkable presence, dominated by a main crystal that reaches 8.8 cm within an overall group measuring nearly 19 cm across. The crystal displays the classic prismatic, hexagonal habit of macrocrystalline quartz, terminated by well-formed rhombohedral faces that catch the light across a bright, vitreous surface. The warm, golden-honey coloration is even and natural, giving the piece a strong visual impact whether placed in a display case or used as a centerpiece in a mineralogical collection.

The specimen comes from Tsarafara Sud, also known as Ankadilava, a historic pegmatite working in the Sahatany Valley near Ibity, in the Antsirabe II district of Madagascar's central highlands. This complex-type lithium-cesium-tantalum pegmatite, part of the broader Sahatany Pegmatite Field covering roughly 150 square kilometers with over a hundred known pegmatite bodies, has long been celebrated among collectors for producing fine polychromatic tourmalines, cookeite, and gem-quality quartz including citrine. Mining in the area has historically been carried out by small-scale artisanal miners working through networks of narrow, hand-dug tunnels, some reportedly extending over twenty meters into the pegmatite body.

What makes this piece especially interesting to collectors is its status as genuine natural citrine rather than the far more common heat-treated amethyst sold under the same name worldwide. Madagascar is recognized as one of the relatively few sources where true, untreated citrine occurs naturally in the pegmatite pockets of the Sahatany field, making this specimen a comparatively uncommon find on the market.

This specimen is composed of natural citrine, the golden-yellow variety of macrocrystalline quartz (SiO2). Unlike the vast majority of citrine found on the gem and mineral market, which is produced by heat-treating amethyst or smoky quartz, true natural citrine forms directly in this color within the host rock and is considerably rarer. The cause of natural citrine's color remains a topic of ongoing scientific study, but current mineralogical evidence points most strongly to aluminum-based color centers within the quartz crystal lattice, generated through natural irradiation over geological time. This is essentially the same mechanism responsible for the brown coloration of smoky quartz, which explains why citrine and smoky quartz are frequently found in the same pegmatite pockets and sometimes even within the same crystal. This differs fundamentally from heat-treated amethyst, whose color instead comes from finely distributed iron oxide minerals such as hematite and goethite that form during the heating process.

The crystal displays a well-developed prismatic, hexagonal habit terminated by rhombohedral faces, a classic growth form for quartz crystallizing freely within open pockets, known as miarolitic cavities, inside the pegmatite body. This citrine formed within a complex-type lithium-cesium-tantalum (LCT) granitic pegmatite, a rock type that crystallizes slowly from silica- and mineral-rich residual melts deep within the Earth's crust, allowing large, well-formed crystals to develop over long periods of time.

Few people realize that most citrine sold worldwide today is not natural citrine at all, but amethyst that has been heat-treated to turn it yellow or orange. Truly natural, untreated citrine like this specimen is considerably rarer, forming only under specific geological conditions found in a handful of localities around the world, including this particular corner of Madagascar's central highlands.
