Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz is the pale-to-medium pink variety of quartz (SiO2), almost always found in massive, translucent form rather than as sharp crystals. Its signature color comes from microscopic fibrous inclusions of a mineral related to dumortierite, which also give some specimens a soft, cloudy glow or striking asterism when cut as spheres and cabochons — a phenomenon known as star rose quartz. It typically forms in the quartz cores of granitic pegmatites, though hydrothermal veins also produce fine material.

The classic source for massive rose quartz is Minas Gerais, Brazil, especially the pegmatite fields around Galiléia and Sapucaia, where the exceptionally rare crystallized "pink quartz" variety has also been documented — including the famous La Madona Rosa specimen. Madagascar, notably the Anjanabonoina pegmatite field and the historic Tsaramanga deposit, produces intensely colored, often transparent material prized for both star cabochons and rare Tyndall-effect blue-toned pieces. In the United States, the Scott Mine near Custer, South Dakota, and the Newry pegmatite in Maine's Oxford County are historically important localities, the latter noted for some of the world's first documented crystallized pink quartz.

Collectors seek rose quartz for its rarity in well-formed crystal habit, its association with smoky quartz, tourmaline, and beryl in pegmatite pockets, and the exceptional star and Tyndall-blue effects found only in top Brazilian and Madagascan material. Fine large display pieces with even, saturated color and good translucency remain among the most desirable specimens in any quartz collection.
