Talc

Talc is a hydrated magnesium silicate with the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, a member of the phyllosilicate family and namesake of the talc group. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness defines value 1 as the hardness of talc, the softest mineral. Talc is a monoclinic mineral with a sheet structure similar to the micas, and has perfect cleavage that follows planes between the weakly bonded sheets. It is translucent to opaque, with colors ranging from whitish grey to green with a vitreous and pearly luster. Geologically, talc dominantly forms from the metamorphism of magnesian minerals such as serpentine, pyroxene, amphibole, and olivine, in the presence of carbon dioxide and water, and is commonly associated with chlorite, dolomite, magnesite, tremolite and serpentine. The massive, compact variety, known as steatite or soapstone, has been carved for millennia and remains a prized ornamental and lapidary material.

Well-formed crystals of talc are genuinely rare, making crystallized specimens highly collectible. France's largest talc deposit at the Trimouns mine near Luzenac, in Ariège, produces some of the best-known samples, with transparent lamellar crystals of hexagonal habit grouped in fascicles. In recent decades Trimouns has also become celebrated for outstanding crystals of rare-earth minerals such as allanite, parisite and bastnäsite, found alongside the talc in dolomite vugs. In Italy, fine microcrystals occur at Brosso (Lessolo, Piedmont), while the talc-chlorite schists of Val Malenco in Lombardy represent one of the classic Alpine occurrences tied to metasomatic dolomite alteration. Other historic European localities include Rabenwald in Austria and Habachtal, the latter noted for talc intergrown with pyrite and actinolite. Exceptional pseudomorphs are another highlight for collectors: excellent talc pseudomorphs, especially after quartz, are famous from the Johannes Mine in Göpfersgrün, Bavaria, Germany, while talc pseudomorphs after enstatite come from Bamble, Telemark, Norway, and talc pseudomorphs after dolomite from the Respina Mine, Puebla de Lillo, Spain.

In the Americas, excellent talc specimens and pseudomorphs come from Brumado, Bahia, Brazil, and a rare form of green crystallized talc comes from the Vermont Verde Antique Quarry, Rochester, Windsor County, Vermont, with further deposits at Chester and Ludlow. The Maryland–Pennsylvania serpentine belt, especially at Pilot, is another notable North American source. Collectors seek talc for its distinctive greasy feel, its role in defining the base of the Mohs scale, and the contrast between fragile micaceous crystals and robust soapstone or steatite specimens.
