It belongs to the \u003cstrong\u003eapatite group\u003c\/strong\u003e and sits in a solid-solution series with \u003cstrong\u003epyromorphite\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003evanadinite\u003c\/strong\u003e, which it closely resembles — a resemblance that gave the species its name, from the Greek for \"imitator.\" Typical habit is short hexagonal prisms, but mimetite is best known for globular, botryoidal and reniform crusts, and for the barrel-shaped curved crystals known as \u003cstrong\u003ecampylite\u003c\/strong\u003e. Colors range from pale yellow through orange, brown, and occasionally green.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe type locality is \u003cstrong\u003eJohanngeorgenstadt\u003c\/strong\u003e in Saxony, Germany, source of the classic large tabular crystals once described by Goethe. The world's finest campylite comes from \u003cstrong\u003eDry Gill Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e in the Caldbeck Fells, Cumbria, England, while acicular sprays are prized from the \u003cstrong\u003eClara Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e, Germany. \u003cstrong\u003eTsumeb\u003c\/strong\u003e, Namibia has yielded spectacular spiky, gemmy crystals, and Mexico's \u003cstrong\u003eOjuela Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eSan Pedro Corralitos\u003c\/strong\u003e in Chihuahua are famous for lustrous yellow botryoidal clusters. Exceptional lustrous specimens also come from the \u003cstrong\u003ePingtouling Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e, Guangdong, China, and large whitish-yellow crystals from \u003cstrong\u003eMount Bonnie\u003c\/strong\u003e, Northern Territory, Australia.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCollectors seek mimetite for its vivid autumnal palette, distinctive botryoidal and barrel-shaped habits, high density, and frequent association with wulfenite, cerussite, smithsonite and galena.
