Formed roughly six million years ago during the Messinian salinity crisis, when the Mediterranean nearly dried up, the gessoso-solfifera formation extends across the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro-Urbino, giving rise to the legendary \u003cstrong\u003eCabernardi\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003ePerticara\u003c\/strong\u003e sulfur mines. The \u003cstrong\u003eCabernardi Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e near Sassoferrato, active from 1878 to 1963, produced spectacular sulfur crystals alongside \u003cstrong\u003egypsum\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003earagonite\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003ecelestine\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003epyrite\u003c\/strong\u003e, fluorite and quartz, while the nearby \u003cstrong\u003ePerticara mine\u003c\/strong\u003e yielded some of the finest sulfur specimens ever collected in Europe, ranging from deep yellow to yellow-orange and yellow-green, with associated tabular \u003cstrong\u003ecelestine\u003c\/strong\u003e crystals up to 5 cm and gemmy gypsum crystals reaching 10 cm. These historic sulfur districts, part of the wider Marche-Romagna mining basin honored today by the Marche Mining Geopark, supplied major museum collections including those of Bologna, Milan and Bergamo.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBeyond the sulfur mines, the region's karst and evaporite geology produces other collector-prized minerals. At \u003cstrong\u003eSan Venanzio\u003c\/strong\u003e near Fossombrone, old quarries have yielded fine \u003cstrong\u003ecalcite\u003c\/strong\u003e and barian \u003cstrong\u003ecelestine\u003c\/strong\u003e specimens. The world-famous \u003cstrong\u003eFrasassi Caves\u003c\/strong\u003e at Genga, within the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi Natural Park, showcase a different but equally striking mineralogical story: hypogenic speleogenesis driven by hydrogen sulfide-rich waters has produced extensive replacement \u003cstrong\u003egypsum\u003c\/strong\u003e crusts, microcrystalline floor deposits and large euhedral selenite crystals, alongside monocrystalline \u003cstrong\u003ecalcite\u003c\/strong\u003e stalagmites and dramatic dripstone formations. This sulfuric-acid cave system, among the largest karst complexes in Europe, remains a reference locality for the study of secondary gypsum genesis in limestone terrains.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor collectors, Marche specimens represent a rare intersection of industrial mining heritage and natural cave mineralogy: crystallized sulfur on matrix from Cabernardi and Perticara, gemmy celestine from the Romagna-Marche evaporite belt, and gypsum selenite from active hypogenic environments like Frasassi.
