First described in 1902 from the \u003cstrong\u003ePala district\u003c\/strong\u003e of San Diego County, California, and named the following year by Charles Baskerville in honor of gemologist George Frederick Kunz, this stone owes its soft rose, violet, and orchid tones to trace \u003cstrong\u003emanganese\u003c\/strong\u003e substituting within its crystal lattice. Kunzite forms in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites alongside minerals such as \u003cstrong\u003ealbite\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003elepidolite\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003epetalite\u003c\/strong\u003e, and \u003cstrong\u003eberyl\u003c\/strong\u003e, crystallizing in the monoclinic system as elongated, deeply striated prisms. Related spodumene varieties worth noting alongside kunzite include the chromium-green \u003cstrong\u003ehiddenite\u003c\/strong\u003e, first found at Hiddenite, North Carolina, and the yellow variety known as \u003cstrong\u003etriphane\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCollectors seek kunzite for its unusual combination of gemmy transparency, generous crystal size, and gentle evening-glow color that shifts with lighting and orientation.
