It stands as \u003cstrong\u003ethe most abundant oxidized cobalt mineral\u003c\/strong\u003e in the world's premier cobalt-producing region, the \u003cstrong\u003eKatanga Copperbelt\u003c\/strong\u003e of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it forms through supergene weathering and oxidation of primary cobalt-copper sulfides such as \u003cstrong\u003ecarrollite\u003c\/strong\u003e. Roughly seventy percent of all known heterogenite specimens originate from this single region, making Congolese material the undisputed benchmark for the species. In hand specimen, heterogenite typically presents as jet-black, sooty to intensely lustrous botryoidal or mammillary crusts, often displaying an attractive submetallic iridescence, and it is frequently found intergrown with \u003cstrong\u003echrysocolla\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003emalachite\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003ekolwezite\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003espherocobaltite\u003c\/strong\u003e, cobaltoan calcite and dolomite, cuprite, and pharmacosiderite, producing striking multicolored aggregates prized by collectors.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eClassic Katanga localities include the \u003cstrong\u003eL'Etoile du Congo Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e near Lubumbashi, source of some of the largest and most spectacular heterogenite masses ever recovered, the \u003cstrong\u003eMindingi Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eShangulowé Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e in Kambove Territory, the \u003cstrong\u003eMashamba West Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e within the Sicomines copper-cobalt project, and the historic \u003cstrong\u003eKolwezi mining district\u003c\/strong\u003e, including the \u003cstrong\u003eMusonoi Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eKabolela Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e. The notorious \u003cstrong\u003eShinkolobwe Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e, better known for uranium, has also yielded uranium-bearing heterogenite of considerable scientific interest, with dated specimens revealing a complex, multi-stage genetic history tied to Pliocene weathering events and older hydrothermal episodes. Beyond Central Africa, heterogenite occurs more sparingly in a variety of other cobalt-mineralized districts, among them the \u003cstrong\u003eVignola Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e in Trentino, Italy, associated with pink erythrite; the historic \u003cstrong\u003eSchneeberg\u003c\/strong\u003e silver-cobalt district in Saxony, Germany; the \u003cstrong\u003eGoodsprings\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eBlue Jay Mine\u003c\/strong\u003e district of Nevada, USA; the Profunda Mine in León, Spain; and cobalt occurrences in the Atacama region of Chile and the Aure Valley of France.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCollectors seek heterogenite for its deep black luster, its role as a defining secondary cobalt species alongside minerals like \u003cstrong\u003ekolwezite\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003espherocobaltite\u003c\/strong\u003e in the fabled Congolese cobalt suite, and its striking contrast when paired with vividly colored associates such as pink cobaltoan calcite, blue-green chrysocolla and cornetite, or rose-red erythrite.
