Chrysotile

Chrysotile is the most common member of the serpentine group, a hydrous magnesium silicate with the formula Mg3Si2O5(OH)4 that crystallizes as fine, silky fibers rather than compact crystals. It forms when hot, mineral-rich fluids alter ultramafic rocks such as peridotite and dunite, producing veins of parallel, cross-fiber growth within massive serpentinite. This fibrous habit, combined with flexibility, heat resistance, and a pearly to silky luster ranging from white to golden-green, made chrysotile historically the most exploited variety of asbestos, and today gives fine vein specimens a unique place in serpentine-group and asbestos-mineralogy collections. It is closely associated with lizardite and antigorite, the other two serpentine polymorphs, as well as with magnetite, brucite, and fibrous amphiboles like tremolite and actinolite, which frequently occur as accessory phases within chrysotile veins.

The type locality and one of the most historically important sources is Thetford Mines in Quebec, Canada, together with the nearby Black Lake and Asbestos districts, where enormous serpentinite bodies made this region the world's leading chrysotile producer for over a century. Other classic serpentine-hosted deposits include the Bazhenovo district in the Ural Mountains of Russia, extensive occurrences across Zimbabwe and the Barberton area of South Africa, and carbonate-hosted veins in Vermont, USA, at Belvidere Mountain. In Italy, the Balangero mine near Turin in Piedmont stands out as a particularly notable and locally significant source: the largest and most active chrysotile mine in Europe operating from 1916 to 1990, it also yielded the closely related fibrous mineral balangeroite, first described from this deposit and named after it.

Collector specimens of chrysotile are prized for their silky, chatoyant fiber bundles, often displayed as cross-fiber veins running through dark green to black serpentinite matrix, sometimes showing a golden sheen reminiscent of tiger's eye quartz, to which chrysotile is mineralogically related through pseudomorphic replacement in some occurrences. Museum-quality pieces from Quebec, the Urals, and Balangero document a mineral of major industrial history alongside genuine scientific and aesthetic interest, making well-labeled, safely mounted specimens sought after by serpentine-group specialists, asbestos-history collectors, and systematic mineral collections seeking to represent this classic silicate species.

A striking natural tuft of fibrous chrysotile asbestos, displaying long, silky fibers of a soft white-grey tone radiating outward on matrix.
